Why is Venice the perfect Star Clippers departure port?

20 May 2026

In 2021, Venice banned large cruise ships from entering the historic center and the Giudecca Canal. As a result, the experience of setting sail from the heart of one of the most famous cities in the world is one that is limited to just the lucky few. Many cruise lines use the industrial port of Porto Marghera, a 20-minute drive from the center, or Ravenna, some 90 miles south.

Star Clippers is one of a small, select group of cruise lines permitted to dock at the Basilica Cruise Terminal, located a short walk or Vaporetto journey from all of the main attractions the city has to offer. Offering the opportunity for a romantic pre or post-cruise stay, Venice is the perfect destination to soak up history and culture before or after embarking on the journey of a lifetime.

We have compiled our top tips for Venice:

  • Watch the ship sail in

If you arrive into the city before the sailing departs, you can get a front-row seat to the majestic vision of the ship gracefully gliding down the Giudecca Canal as the sun rises over the historic skyline. It can be guaranteed that she will gain an audience as her towering masts accent the city’s historical skyline.

  • Visit St Mark’s Square and Rialto Bridge early or after 5pm

Avoid the main tourist crowds by using peak-times to explore backstreets, discover hidden beauty spots and maybe do a spot of shopping. Get up early to roam around the hotspots without the queues and rubbing shoulders with other tourists. The best times to visit the popular places whilst truly being able to enjoy the serenity and beauty the city offers are dawn and early evening.

  • Buy a 24-hour Vaporetto pass

Using the waterbus pass as opposed to buying single ride tickets significantly improves the efficiency and economic value of public transportation options. A pass provides unlimited, flexible travel across the main island, Grand Canal and to islands such as Murano and Burano. Once it’s been validated, you are good to go, and do not need to find a ticket booth or vendor every time.

The cost for a 1-day pass is currently €25 per person, or €35 for 48-hours. Unless you only wish to make one or two journeys when you are there, this is the best option.

  • Wear comfortable shoes for walking

Due to the waterways and vehicle limitations, Venice is primarily explored on foot. Explore backstreet gelaterias and quieter canals of the city’s neighbourhood, discovering authentic corners of the city less regularly promoted. Choose an authentic pizzeria in Castello, away from the crowds, or enjoy a peaceful espresso on the island of Giudecca. Perhaps book a Walking Tour, where a local guide can help navigate the layout and you can gain in-depth historical context.

Once on board, the ship will sail at sunset with an audience of intrigued passers-by meandering the St Mark’s Square as the evening draws in. With the powerful tones of Vangelis’ Conquest of Paradise echoing across the deck, it will be difficult to not feel as though you are starring in a scene from a film.
