Mediterranean Shore Excursions To Enjoy In 2019
7th June 2019
If you’ve booked one of our Mediterranean cruises for 2019, or even if you haven’t but are considering it, you can look forward to a whole host of fantastic shore excursions during your trip. With ports of call including Taormina, Kotor and Ibiza on the itineraries, it’s sure to be a summer of fun, food and festivities.
Here are just a few of the options available to book.
Mount Etna Discovery, Taormina
Standing in the shadow of a volcano is a curious situation to be in. It’s hard to comprehend the beauty of such a structure whilst also acknowledging the chaos and destruction it can cause. That being said, you shouldn’t miss the chance to climb to the top of Mount Etna when you arrive in the Sicilian port of Taormina.
Following a scenic drive through lemon groves and vineyards, you will travel most of the way up Europe’s largest active volcano via 4x4 minibus or cable car. The rest of the journey will be a hike led by an experienced guide who will take you to the crater and tell you all about the surrounding lava fields.
Blue Cave Speed Boat Adventure, Kotor
So called because of the way the sun shines onto the water, causing it to glisten and sparkle, the Blue Cave is one of the most popular spots along this stretch of coastline. Taking a speed boat from the beautiful port of Kotor, you will enter the cave to admire the crystal clear water and the height of the chasm that has been carved out of the rock.
There will be time to leave the boat for a swim in this otherworldly location before you stop off at Zanjice beach for some relaxation time on your way back to the ship.
Sherry And Royal Horse Performance, Cadiz
A short drive from Cadiz will take you into the heart of sherry country. Jerez is widely known for the production of this drink that’s much-loved by the British market and you will get the chance to learn about the process of how it’s made and blended. As you enter the Grand Bodega, take time to admire the collection of contemporary art before you sample the sherry for yourself.
The wide open spaces and lush plains in this part of the world mean that Andalusia is also a great spot to breed horses. As you travel back to Cadiz, you will stop off at the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art to enjoy a memorable performance by the prancing horses.
Saint John’s Monastery And The Cave Of The Revelation, Kusadasi
Perched high on the top of a hill in the small Greek village of Chora, you will find one of the holiest Christian places in the world. Saint John’s Monastery features breathtaking frescoes and artefacts dating back to the time of the Byzantine Empire.
Nearby, you will also have the chance to visit the cave in which Saint John lived during his exile. You’ll see where he slept, the desk at which he wrote the Book of Revelation and the three crevices in the rock through which God is said to have spoken.
The Home Cooked Lunch Experience, Piran
One of the best ways to get to know a new part of the world is through its food and that is exactly what you will do when Royal Clipper docks in the Slovenia city of Piran. After transferring to a picturesque vineyard, you will be treated to a home-cooked meal by a local family. As well as sampling some of the dried ham for which the region is famous, you will also be able to swig a few glasses of the celebrated regional wine grown here.
