How To Live Out Your Sailing Dreams On A Star Clippers Ship
1st March 2019
It doesn’t take long to realise that a sailing with Star Clippers is different to any other cruise you will have taken in the past. Our elegant tall ships are made in the image of some of the most famous clippers to grace the waves and, as such, they offer more than a subtle nod to the nostalgic days when these vessels ruled the oceans.
From the glistening teak decks to the authentic sails and the wooden embellishments throughout, the yacht club atmosphere on board is created through a variety of touches from the past. Still, there’s plenty of room for contemporary features on board these ships too, such as state-of-the-art navigation equipment and exquisitely prepared dishes.
So, how can you live out your sailing dreams during a Star Clippers cruise? Let us count the ways.
Climb To The Crow’s Nest
Hanging 226 feet above the sun deck of Star Clipper and Star Flyer (only a paltry 197 feet on Royal Clipper) you’ll find an authentic Crow’s Nest. During certain times, you’ll be given the opportunity to climb to the top for a fantastic picture opportunity and to soak up the magnificent views.
Don’t worry, you’ll be strapped into a harness and a member of the crew will have hold of the rope, so you’re in safe hands. The only difference with our Crow’s Nest is that it’s been kitted out with a plush sofa. Who knows, you may not even want to come down.
Tie Yourself In Knots
One of the enrichment activities offered on board is a knot-tying class that will also have you learning some of the lingo associated with sailing. You’ll be shown a variety of different knots that are often used at sea and get the chance to attempt them yourself. You may find you have a knack for it and will be able to show-off your new skill back on dry land. Along the same lines, there are also classes on how to plot the ship’s position on a map using traditional techniques and equipment.
Bravely Take The Helm
The best way to live out your sailing fantasies is by taking the helm and actually steering one of our majestic clipper ships. With a member of the experienced crew looking over your shoulder and guiding you, the wooden wheel that has become a symbol for the open ocean over the years will be all yours.
Help To Hoist the Sails
The sight of the sails being hoisted to the sound of Vangelis’s theme from ‘Conquest of Paradise’ is something that will stick with you long after your holiday is over and you have returned to your daily routine. And you could take part in this moving ritual. During sailaway, you’re free to join the crew as they unfurl metres and metres of Dacron sails and haul them into position.
Relax In The Bowsprit Nets
When it comes to doing your best impression of a sailor, it’s not all about the hard work involved in hoisting the sails or scrubbing the decks. A much more relaxing thing to do is lay in the bowsprit nets and feel the ocean spray on your face. This is an enviable vantage point from which to look out for dolphins or simply spend some time with your loved one in this romantic setting.
