2019 : 12 months of tall ship voyages from yoga to F1, Mamma Mia to Borneo

January – New Year bucket list

Star Flyer’s January 19th 2019 itinerary, departing from St. Maarten, reads like a catalogue of the most people’s idea of some of the world’s most exquisite and idyllic islands. The ultimate bucket list Caribbean sailing includes three days cruising around the British Virgin Islands and port calls into Anguilla, St. Kitts and St. Barts. Palm trees, deserted beaches, blue skies and turquoise seas will be a daily occurrence for guests on board the spectacular and graceful Star Flyer, with its four towering masts and billowing, cream sails. The ship will sail much of the time under wind power, powered by the gentle Caribbean breezes, making this one of the most eco friendly cruises available too.

February – Romance under sail

Walk hand in hand on pristine white sands, snorkel, dive, lie in the bowsprit net as the ship gently clips the waves below, spend long nights under the stars on Royal Clipper’s teak deck top, and wake to the sound of the sea lapping at the side of the ship. Royal Clipper will drop anchor alongside Iles Des Saintes on Valentine’s Day 2019, one of a cluster of small, idyllic islands off Guadeloupe. A romantic week’s round trip sailing from Barbados around the Windward islands costs from £1640pp, departing 9th February 2019, including all meals on board and port charges.

March – Meeting of the tall ships

One of the most spectacular sights at sea is to see a graceful full-rigged tall ship clipping the waves as it speeds along under wind power. More spectacular still is the sight of two tall ships, for a rare moment when both come alongside. Friendly rivalry between the flagship Royal Clipper and the smaller Star Flyer during their meeting includes a bowsprit salute between uniformed crew members, guests greeting each other from ship to ship and music booming across the ocean waves. To experience this meeting of tall ships, Star Flyer and Royal Clipper are sailing around the Windward Islands during March 2019 and will meet up on 11th March. A week’s sailing on board Royal Clipper, including all meals and port charges, costs from £1640pp.

April – Mini cruise

Departing on 22nd April 2019 Star Clippers has a 5 night sailing from Lisbon to Malaga, enabling those with limited time to experience the exhilaration of cruising under sail and guests who can’t get enough of the tall ships to squeeze in another sailing. After embarkation in Lisbon Royal Clipper remains in Portuguese waters and calls into Portimao, before port calls in Tangier, Gibraltar, Motril and Malaga. The 5 night sailing costs from £1295pp, including all meals on boar and port charges.

May – Borneo maiden port call

Borneo is an exciting new addition to Star Clippers’ existing South East Asia itineraries sailing in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. Known for its beaches and ancient, biodiverse rainforest, it is home to many cultures, cuisines and exotic wildlife, including orangutan, clouded leopards and the Irrawaddy dolphin. The first of the new 10 and 11 night sailings from Kota Kinabalu, Borneo, to Singapore on board Star Clipper departs on 18th May 2019 and costs from £2190pp, including all meals on board and port charges and a 10 night itinerary.

June – Mamma Mia sailing

The Greek islands of Skiathos and Skopelos, where the 2008 movie “Mamma Mia” was filmed, are included for the first time in a new 7 night round trip sailing from Athens (Piraeus), with four departures between May and August 2019. During the new spectacular sailing itinerary Star Flyer also drops anchor alongside Dikili, Turkey, as well as the Greek islands of Limnos, Skiathos, Skopelos and Poros. July – Family holidays under sail

Family active holidays on board Star Clipper’s three magnificent tall ships include the chance for families to bond together under thousands of feet of billowing sails in an informal and friendly atmosphere, with plenty of time out in the fresh sea air. The fully crewed ships include a qualified sports crew to organise complimentary sail boarding, kayaking, waterskiing, mast climbing to the crow’s nest, 15m above deck, light hearted deck top games and a weekly crew/staff talent show. A far cry from computer games and smart phones. September – Celebrate Singapore’s 200th anniversary & Grand Prix

During 2019 Singapore celebrates 200 years since Stamford Raffles laid the foundation for the modern city, now one of the most cosmopolitan and modern cities in Asia. One of the best times to be in Singapore will be in September 2019, when the Formula 1 teams are also in town for the Marina Bay Grand Prix, 20 – 22nd September. Asia’s first street race around the city and along the esplanade is now an annual fixture and the cars speed past the waterfront, historic buildings, exotic gardens and the City Hall, at up to 300km/h. A must for GP fans is only bettered by a week’s sailing round trip sailing from Bali on board the magnificent tall ship Star Clipper, departing on 14th September. A three night stay at the Parkroyal on Pickering in Singapore, followed by a 7 night tall ship cruise from Bali, through Indonesia’s exquisite and idyllic islands, to return to Bali for a two night stay at The Conrad Bali costs from £3499pp, including internal flight to Singapore, all meals on board and port charges.

October – Autumn Med sunshine

The last rays of Mediterranean sunshine can often be felt right into October, when port calls are more tranquil and temperatures more comfortable for exploring ashore. Autumn light provides a spectacular time to be at sea, with land bathed by the sun, lower in the sky and casting golden light across the sea. Spectacular sunsets and long, warm days ashore set up the keen sailor for the winter ahead, or perhaps provide anticipation for a Caribbean or Asia winter sailing! For last chance Mediterranean sunshine, Star Flyer sails from Piraeus (Athens) to Valetta (Malta) on 15th October 2019, with three port calls along the Greek mainland before visiting Sicily, Gozo and Valetta. The week’s sailing costs from £1655pp including all meals on board and port charges.

November – Transit the Panama Canal

Transit from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean through one of the world’s greatest feats of engineering, the 48 mile long Panama Canal. The 104 year old waterway saves a journey of around 8000 miles around Cape Horn, and vessels taking advantage of this short cut between the Caribbean and South America pass through a system of 12 locks to rise 26m to the main elevation of the Panama Canal. This memorable experience is part of a 14 night sailing on board Royal Clipper (departing 16th  November 2019) from Barbados to Panama City. The sailing costs from £3375pp including all meals on board and port charges.

December – Christmas in a pristine beach in Asia

Spend a peaceful 25th December 2019 on the idyllic Thai island of Ko Adang, way off the radar of tourist groups and a long way from the West’s consumerist Christmas. With only a handful of permanent inhabitants, the pristine white beaches and deserted coves are mostly deserted, while the clear, warm waters are teeming with marine life, making it a perfect snorkelling spot. The island port call is part of a 7 night sailing through Thai and Malaysian waters, between Phuket and Singapore, departing on 22nd December 2019. The sailing costs from £1495pp, including all meals on board and port charges.

Notes to editors:

Star Clippers operates three of the world’s largest and tallest fully-crewed sailing vessels, with a new ship currently under construction. The ships can drop anchor in smaller harbours and visit ports often untouched by larger cruise ships and providing guests with the amenities and atmosphere of a private yacht.

High standards of service are provided by an attentive crew and all three ships have expansive teak decks, swimming pools, informal dining, a convivial Tropical Bar on deck and a comfortable piano bar and are large enough to offer first class accommodation and dining.

The two smaller ships, Star Flyer and Star Clipper, take 170 guests each, with a crew of 70, while Royal Clipper carries 227 with a crew of 106.
